Design for Deconstruction

This technical note provides guidance on aspects of design and construction that improve the ability of a steel-framed building to be deconstructed.

Steel is the most recycled building material in the world by weight. However, recyclability isn't the only valuable attribute steel offers in terms of sustainable design.

If we consider the hierarchy for waste management priority – which is Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and finally Dispose – it's evident that reducing the amount of steel or reusing existing steel is preferential to recycling.

Designing for deconstruction allows maximum benefit in the reuse of steel members.
